Things to do on Kawau Island
WALKING, FISHING, RELAXING, SAILING HOLIDAY AND ISLAND VACATION IN NEW ZEALAND

Even More Things to do on Kawau Island
Sit back, relax and listen to the native birdsong.  Wood pigeons, tuis, fantails, silver eyes frolicking in the Pohutukawa and Puriri trees and flightless, cheeky Wekas can be seen around the bush. At the water’s edge, kingfishers, grey herons, oyster catchers, ducks and gulls forage for food and as dusk falls the calls of the little blue penguins, NZ icon, the “Kiwi” and mooreporks can be heard across the bay.

Enjoy the outdoor seating areas where you can sunbathe, or read a book or magazine from our library. We also have several board games, petanque or a dart board available for your enjoyment.

Kayaks are available for guests to explore the sheltered inlets of North Cove and in settled conditions venture further afield to Bon Accord Harbour, Mansion House and Vivian Bay.

If a walk is the order of the day, there are several walks on Kawau Island.  From Kawau Lodge take a short jaunt up through the bush to the ridgeline where you can enjoy a pleasant walk through native forest.  There are several other walks on Kawau and your hosts can assist you in the right direction.

A 60 minute bush walk over to a special bay (above) on the seaward side of Kawau Island. You will often be the only people on this pristine, golden sand beach. Share a picnic basket and a cold bottle of Matakana wine and this will indeed be a very special occasion that will be remembered for a long time.

Blue Adventures supply paddle boarding tours and lessons.
Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is easy to learn, a lot of fun and keeps you fit while promoting balance and core strength. Stand up paddleboarding is also a great way to explore and discover new places while experiencing nature in a healthy new way. SUP is very popular and currently is the fastest growing sport in the world.

We can organise guided stand up paddleboarding lessons and tours for our guests. Lessons and tours usually take about 1.5 hours and all gear is provided (boards, paddles, wetsuits and buoyancy aids). Red Air inflatable paddleboards are used, which are perfect for kids and adults. Red Air SUP boards are great flat water cruisers, very user friendly and at 33'' wide they are super stable. Guided tours and lessons are priced from $60 per person . Prior bookings essential. Read more at Blue Adventures Website.

Fishing trips can be arranged or just fish off the jetty.  At low tide you can walk around the rocks and fish off the point.

Enjoy a trip exploring Kawau Bay with us on our 28’ "Dolphin Endeavour" . We can take you out to Moturekareka or Motuketekete Island and enjoy a picnic lunch ashore.  Further north is Goat Island and if the conditions are ideal, we can run up there, anchor offshore and go snorkelling in the Marine Reserve.
Boating Options>>

Visit historic Mansion House where Governor Grey’s former mansion is open to visitors. Wander through the beautiful grounds, which still bear traces of the collection of exotic plants and trees that Governor Grey planted.  A longer walk can lead you to the Coppermine ruins, School House Bay or Bostaquet Bay where still today remain the two large trees which formed the canopy and entrance to the banquet hall where a tribe of Maori resided.
Kawau is a taonga (treasure) with many special places and values. National reserves like those on Kawau Island protect natural, historic and cultural heritage for all New Zealanders, and help safeguard the biodiversity of the planet. The tangata whenua of Kawau have a spiritual, cultural and historical relationship with their taonga.
